10 Questions to Ask a Bathroom Remodeling Contractor Before You Hire

HomePro Help guide · Updated October 16, 2026

A bathroom project is a real investment, and the contractor you choose matters as much as the materials. Whether you're converting a tub to a shower or installing a walk-in tub, these questions will help you compare providers and avoid surprises.

1. Are you licensed for this work in my state?

Licensing rules vary by state and city, and plumbing work often has its own requirements. Ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board.

2. Are you insured?

Ask for proof of general liability insurance and, if they have employees, workers' compensation coverage. This protects you if something goes wrong on the job.

3. Will you handle permits?

Many bathroom projects need a permit, especially when plumbing moves. Find out who pulls the permit and who schedules inspections.

4. Who will actually do the work?

Some companies use their own crews; others use subcontractors. Either can be fine, but you should know who will be in your home and who is responsible for the result.

5. What exactly is included in the price?

Ask for a written, itemized quote: removal, plumbing, waterproofing, base, walls, fixtures, door, accessories and cleanup. Make sure two quotes are describing the same scope before you compare them.

6. What happens if you find hidden damage?

Water damage or rot sometimes shows up once the old tub is removed. Ask how that's handled and how extra costs are approved before work continues.

7. How long will the project take?

Get an estimated start date and duration in writing, and ask how long you'll be without a working shower or tub.

8. What warranties come with the job?

There may be a manufacturer's warranty on products and a separate warranty on labor. Ask what each one covers and for how long, and get it in writing.

9. How do payments work?

Ask about the deposit and payment schedule. Be cautious of anyone who wants full payment before work begins. If financing is offered, read the terms carefully.

10. Can I see examples or speak to past customers?

Photos of similar projects and a few references can tell you a lot about the quality of the work and how the company communicates.

A few red flags

Taking an hour to ask these questions can save you a lot of stress later. If you're ready to start comparing options, you can talk with an independent local provider about your project.
